Base yourself nearby, eat well, sleep well

The honest picture

Right now, on-site lodging and dining inside the SIR are limited and still developing. For most visitors the smart move is a day trip from Ahmedabad, or an overnight base in Bhavnagar or a nearby town. Plans for a Tent City, food courts and more residential and hospitality facilities are moving fast — check the Updates page before you travel.

Our recommendation

Stay in Ahmedabad for the widest choice of hotels and restaurants, and do Dholera + Lothal as a day loop. Choose Bhavnagar if you are also visiting Velavadar or the coast and want a shorter final drive.

Where to eat

Carry water and snacks for the day itself. For proper meals, eat in Ahmedabad or Bhavnagar — and don't miss a Gujarati thali: dal, kadhi, vegetables, roti, rice and a sweet, served in the generous style the region is famous for.

A traditional Gujarati thali spread
A Gujarati thali — the region's signature meal, best enjoyed in Ahmedabad or Bhavnagar.
  • Ahmedabad: thali restaurants, street food (including the famous Manek Chowk at night), and modern cafés.
  • Bhavnagar: solid Gujarati and Kathiyawadi restaurants near the railway station and main market.
  • On the road: highway dhabas and tea stalls on the way — fine for a break, not for a full meal plan.

Planned facilities to watch

  • Tent City — a planned glamping-style hospitality zone.
  • Food courts and early retail in the Activation Area.
  • More residential and hospitality projects as the city fills in.
