The expressway is the game-changer
The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway (NE-8), roughly 109 km long, is operational and cuts the journey from Ahmedabad to about 45 minutes. It is an access-controlled expressway — smooth, fast and genuinely enjoyable to drive. This single road has transformed Dholera from an all-day expedition into a realistic day trip.
By air: Dholera International Airport
The airport is in advanced construction, with trial activity reported and operations targeted in the coming months. When it opens, it will put Dholera on the aviation map directly. Until then, the nearest major airports are Ahmedabad (Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International) and Bhavnagar.

Self-drive is the most flexible option. Taxis and private cabs from Ahmedabad are common; agree on a full-day fare for a Dholera + Lothal loop. Public buses and shared transport exist but are less convenient for the scattered sights — a private vehicle is strongly recommended.
By rail
The nearest railway stations are Dholi (on the Ahmedabad–Bhavnagar line) and Bhavnagar. From either, you will need a taxi or auto for the final leg. There is no station inside the SIR.

Before you drive
Fuel, food and water stops inside the SIR are limited. Fill up in Ahmedabad or Bhavnagar, carry water and snacks, and check the Updates page for any access changes near construction zones.
